This book exists because that gap is costing lives.  In churches, addiction is often seen primarily as a moral failing—something to confess, repent of, and pray away.  By contrast, in treatment settings, spirituality may be dismissed as irrelevant or treated only as a vague coping mechanism, not as a formative force.  These approaches fall short for different reasons: not because faith is weak or science is wrong, but because neither captures the full complexity of addiction or the wholeness of human beings.

Addiction is not simply a sin problem.  It is not merely a brain disease.  It is not merely a behavioral issue.  It is all of these—and more.
